Warung Makan Betawi Ngoempoel, Authentic Betawi Cuisine with Traditional Recipe

In Jakarta not so many you can find traditional restaurant that served traditional Betawi cuisine. There are only several area that actually where you can find this kind of restaurant. The South of Jakarta especially in Jagakarsa, Ciganjur or depok you can find this kind of restaurant. You might wondering why you can find so many Padang restaurant rather then Betawi restaurant even Jakarta their natives is Betawi people. But Then again Jakarta has been a melting pot where you can fins so many race from many parts of Indonesia therefore here you can find so many restaurant that represent their culture. However since most of the Betawi people have been moved to suburb, therefore you can only find their traditional restaurant in this area.

Stage that can be used for community


Betawi Ngoempoel basically a restaurant run by native Betawi Family. Even from the traditional buildings and decoration represent Betawi’s culture and here they only served traditional betawi’s dish that you cannot find in the other restaurant.  This restaurant complex has several area, they offer you the gazebo area , they also has big building forms like a stage that can be use as huge gazebo to have meal during the day but also can be transform into a stage to performed traditional Betawi play like music such as Gambus and Tanjidor or traditional betawi play like lenong and also betawi dance like Tari Topeng. Really this restaurant also used for the this traditional performance for people around the neighbourhood.  Beside that they also offer you a dining area that décor like old betawi house. In front of the door they have a pair of Ondel Ondel (traditional betawi’s giant Dol). For betawi’s people, Ondel Ondel made to cast away bad spirits and as guardian from bad luck. This is why normally Ondel Ondel’s face often made creepy.  During the traditional wedding or any other traditional ceremony this pair of ondel ondel often use as one of the entertainment

The inside interior also full of Betawi’s ornaments such as old pictures of the Betawi’s traditional dance and plays. Also you can find the old cooking utensil they use to cook dishes in the old days. It’s very homey ambiance and the waiter will greet you with “Mpok .” And “Abang”  cause that what they normally called people in the society.

The service here during weekend is slow, since the restaurant always full. And if you come more than 2 PM , some of the signature menu normally already sold out. As I said here you can find some of traditional Betawi dishes that really rare to find nowadays. The recipe usually passed down to generation to their daughter. So these some the dishes that traditional will always made within the Betawi’s Family.  

Pecak Ikan Mas - 20 K


Pecak Ikan Mas – 20 K
This dish is basically fried Ikan Mas known as carper fish. This fish can be easily found in the river. And easily breed in the community pond. This fish has huge economic value, because easy  to breed and you can find it in almost traditional market.  This fish is deeply fried then season it with Pecak. Pecak is basically the method of cooking that use shallot, chili, ginger cooked by stir-fry all the ingredient then add a little water to ensure the fresh seasoning not scorched. As finishing touch they add lime to add acid hint in the dish. The taste is spicy, savory and sour. It’s perfect for lunch because of the freshness taste and also  the perfect combination of the savory, spicy and a bit sour. One portion of this dish can be share for two person.

Pepes Peda - 15 K


Pepes Peda – 15 K
Pepes is an Indonesian cooking method using banana leaves as food wrapping. The banana leaves package containing food is secured with lidi semat (a small nail made from central rib of coconut leaf and sew upon banana leaf), coooked on steam, in boiled water. The fishthey use is Ikan peda, basically salted white water fish that taste salty then seasoning with some chili, shallot and other herbd. The taste is savory and perfect to eat with sambal terasi (traditional chili sauce with shrimp paste). If you eat this with steamed rice is very delicious.
Ayam Kampung Goreng - 25 K


Ayam Kampung Goreng – 25 K
This is basically chicken that boiled with the seasoning such as turmeric, salt , cilantro and any other herbs then they deep fried the chicken until it’s crispy and golden brown. The chicken taste savory and tender inside and crispy outside. Have it with sambal and steamed rice then it’s perfect.

Semur Jengkol


Semur Jengkol – 15 K

This traditional dish is hard to find. This made from jengkol that has strong flavor and fragrance. Not so many people like to eat jengkol because the after-smell but if you can cook it the right way, this dish is delicious. Here’s they cooked it perfectly , they made it very tender marinated with soy sauce, palm sugar, shallot. The taste is sweet and savory. They said only Betawi’s people can cook this dish perfectly and here the taste is very authentic

Sayur Asem Bening – 10 K
Sayur asem betawi signature is their simple and humble ingredient for seasoning. The taste is savory and tangy.  The soup contain peanut, young papaya, long bean, melinjo and the melinjo leaves. It’s fresh and perfect balance between the savory and the tanginess in the soup itself.  Served in a small bowl for a person portion

Sayur Asem  Goreng – 10 K
Basically similar with the sayur asem bening but the difference is they stir-fry the seasoning so the soup is looked a bit red and oily. The taste if more stand out but basically I prefer the Sayur asem bening than this.

Sop Iga

Sop Iga – 30 K
Sop Iga or Rib soup is made from Iga broth served with potato, carrot and leek. The seasoning is simple and bring the taste of the rib into their soup. It’s savory and served with sambel ijo (chili sauce made from green chilli). The rib is cook until it’s tender and juicy. It’s so tender you can actually separated the meat just by the spoon. I like this sop iga because is so delicious and tender.

In overall the dish here taste very authentic and really some of the dish here is really rare. This traditional dish is worth to try. You can actually taste the traditional betawi recipe that has been passed down to generation. The price is very reasonable for that kind of food quality. These dish really bring out memories of the betawi old days.

MonViet is served Authentic  Vietnamese dish. The recipe has been in the generation for over 40 years. The story started in the 1970’s when a Vietnamese mother left her village to open a noodle stall at the street corner of Saigon. The traditional noodle soup called Bun Bo Hue and soon become popular in the Hue Area.

Nowadays you can still taste this old recipe on noodle soup at MonViet. They just open their new restaurant in Setiabudi one. And I come and visit with my husband to taste the famous pho.
The décor is made like you are in the Vietnam noodle soup stall. The Big traditional noodle stall is place in front of the restaurant and very aye catching invite people to come and try. The wall is full of paintings that very Vietnamese. Here they divided the dining area into two sections which is smoking and non smoking area.

The service is bit slow, however the waiter really know their menu. They will explain you the menu that written in Vietnamese and recommend you the best ones. The waiter wears traditional Vietnam clothes. It’s add the uniqueness of the restaurant. Now let’s talked about the food


Bun Bo Hue

This is their signature dish that you must try. The recipe is being passed down to generation since 40 years ago. Its Spicy hue beef soup with vermicelli. The basic soup is savory and tasty not like any other Pho dishes that I have tried before, this dish really tasty not bland. They add generous slice of beef meat and they served it with additional vegetables. To add the spiciness they will give you traditional chili sauce special made for this pho. The chili sauce adds the spiciness and gives a hint of tangy taste for the soup. Overall I love this dish. Its delicious. The portion is perfect for one person.

Another menu that recommend by the waiter is com cha ca kho. This dish is basically dory fish cake clay-pot that served with steamed rice. The dory fish cake taste savory and sweet. It’s taste like a omelet but the sauce is yummy. Perfect to have with steamed rice because is savory and salty enough to eat with rice.

I forgot the actual name of this menu. But this is basically white bean and red been with cendol served with crushed iced, coconut milk and sugar syrup. Taste like our own traditional cendol, but the cendol made from sago and bit springy and chewy. The bean taste perfectly blend with the coconut milk. The portion is big, so better for sharing.

Green Tea by Pot
For the drinks we choose this hot green tea that they served by pot and the best thing is they allow us to refill. The tea is just nice and not too bitter. Perfect to neutralized the spiciness from our meal.

Overall I love the authentic taste from their menu. It’s tasty and meet my expectation. Not Bland at all. Will come back for more food and taste their famous Vietnamese coffee.

This restaurant located in the Foundry 8 complex at SCBD. The place is spacious with casual wooden decor. They have cozy ambiance with big sofa and unique dining area. It's quiet  and secluded for you to have coffee, meal or drinks after work

Looking by the name of it, i thought it's only a coffee house, but i was wrong. They have two different bar and one restaurant. One is the coffee bar and the other is bar that served various of cocktail, house pouring, wine or just mocktail. Not only they served drinks, they also offer wide variant set of menu from western to asian cuisines. From Appetizer, Entree until dessert. Kaffeine is offer you a place to relax after a long day to escape the jakarta horrific traffic.

This time i am here for the coffee and dessert. Although the service is responsive and the waiter is friendly and patient, it's just when i order for coffee the waiter don't really seem to know much about the coffee they have here.

This hazelnut late is foamy and topped with cream and caramel syrup on top. They separate the sugar so you can choose your own level of sweetness. The taste is okay, the hazelnut taste is not really dominated the drink. More creamy and milky if i might add. I guess more coffee and hint of hazelnut syrup would be nice.

This latte just okay, nothing special. For me as coffee lover, this drinks need more coffee and less milky. so The taste not too milky and more like vanilla smoothies over ice. But the taste not bad. For people that has problem with drinking strong coffee this drink is an option.

Black Russian Pie - 65 K
Best black Russian pie ever !!!! with exclamation mark. The creamy fillings of the pie is sensational. The texture is creamy and mousse alike. The hint taste from the liquor (they use vodka) really standout. it's bitter and sweet sensation. But just minor thing, the crust is too thick and hard. other than that Love it alot ! surely will comeback for this amazing Black Russian pie. 


Overall the ambiance is great and spacious also cozy. Perfect place to relax after a long day and escape the jakarta’s traffic for a while. I will try their main dish menu on my next visit. I heard their crispy duck is pretty good. For the coffee taste i think there is other place that better. Need to add a punch of a strong coffee taste in their coffee however for their Black Russian Pie definitely the best so far

Amber, Place to unwind with Delish Dessert and amazing Sky Bar



Senopati has the newest place, it s called Amber chocolate Bar. Located in the busy street of senopati, Amber  is  a new place to unwind while waiting for Jakarta’s Traffic to cool off. What’s unique about Amber is they have different décor on each floor. Amber has 3 and half floor. First floor décor is very café and girly where you can pick cute and delish cake, pastries and macaroon. The décor is classic and girly with chandelier and cute colorful chair.

On the second floor the ambiance is more like library with cozy sofa and chair dominated, wooden floor and big book shelf and also a huge shelf full of wine. Instead of put their wine in a cellar or special room, they just display their wine collection a huge shelf and use it as their decoration as well. The décor gives warm ambiance to dine with family, friends of just intimate date with your loved ones.

The third floor is my favorite. Third floor is the bar with transparent roof , so you can view the night sky and the light from the building around senopati. It’s just beautiful at night. They provide 2 huge sofa area that you can book with minimum bill of three million rupiah. The sofa fit up to probably 6 – 8 people. The bar background is decorated with small birds 3D shapes and bottle of liquor. They also has patio with sofa on the outdoor area for you to have drinks with friends. At the roof they also provide sofa in open air area, so you can enjoy the night sky. The view of from the light of building nearby is amazing.

The service is good. The waiter will tell you about their menu and patiently answer your question. Amber served fusion cuisine. This time I visited the restaurant with some foodie friends , we actually decided to have dessert night therefore we just order some entree only. So here’s the review from some of their food

Strawberry Mousse - 35 K

Strawberry Mousse – 35 K
This cure red cake is delicious, so far one of their best cake that I tried, The taste is sweet with hint of sour from the strawberry cream. The texture is creamy and light. They add the white chocolate roll on top of the cake. Yummy

Pistachio Raspberry - 50 K

Pistachio Raspberry Chocolate – 50 K
A very eye catching cake with a green color and velvety texture, and will make you so curious to try. When you cut the cake you will find pink color that comes from raspberry cream fillings. The taste is sweet and also a bit tangy but for me this cake so cute when you open it. It’s creamy and one o their signature cake

Macaroon Raspberry Sandwich

This cake is basically two large macaroons with the fresh raspberry in the middle and fresh raspberry cream filling. It is my favorite dessert so far. The macaroon is not to sweet and crunchy. The fresh raspberry gives a fresh sweet and sour taste and perfectly combined with raspberry cream. Is just perfect balance between sweet and sour taste. I love it a lot.
Chocolate Salted Caramel Pie - 40 K

This cake also one of the best seller here. The chocolate crust filled with the salty caramel is just perfect combination. The taste is combination from sweetness of the chocolate and the salty that comes from the caramel filling surely will satisfy your taste bud. I love this dessert because not to sweet

Chocolate mousse – 40 K
This layers of white chocolate and dark chocolate is light and sweet but not too sweet. It is just perfect. The texture is light and is melted right in your mouth. It’s creamy and delicious. But for me the taste is not amazing. Just taste like any other mouse. This one is just like mouse with harder and thicker texture.

This is has chocolate brownies layer as their crust and dark milk chocolate all the way to the top. For me is just to heavy and might not finish it by myself. Too sweet for my taste and too dense and heavy with those layers of chocolate combine with dark chocolate brownies in the bottom.

The pastries are just ordinary, nothing special. The taste of the apple filling is good. With the acidity taste from the apple and the sweetness is okay. But not my favorite cause the pastries is just not soft enough and rather dry

This is basically ordinary bread topped with chocolate melt on top. The taste is just too ordinary. The bread texture is not soft.  The taste is plain and the only sweetness is only comes from the melt chocolate on top that looked like just for garnish.

Their cappuccino is just okay. Milkier, the taste of the coffee is not strong. It Is a bit overpriced for that kind of quality.

Pork Belly - 130 K

The meat is perfectly cooked and it’s juicy and tender. The sauce is delish and it looked like a foam garnish in the platting. The portion is small and only for one person. The platting is appealing and beautiful and most of all it’s just delicious

Roasted Chicken Paris mashed – 105 K
This roasted chicken is also cooked perfectly. The chicken meat is juicy and tender and not dry at all. Well that always a good sign. This dish decorated with foamy look alike as well  just like the pork belly dish. The mashed potato is creamy and delish. Small portion as well, only for a person. They served only 2 small piece of chicken per portion.

Overall Amber is great place to have dinner and has delicious dessert. The ambiance also great and you can choose whether you just want to have cakes and tea in the afternoon or nice dinner or maybe just to chill and have drinks while enjoying city skyline from their sky bar. And no worries, amber provide you elevator so you can just go to the third floor directly in no time. The service is great and responsive.
